KJO Architecture LLC is a Philadelphia, PA-based architecture and planning office. Our project base consists of small- to medium-scale residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects. Our client base consists of building owners, developers, construction managers, attorneys, realtors, design-builders, and contractors. Our services include planning and feasibility studies, comprehensive architectural design, and construction administration. Our priority is creating exceptional buildings and designs that enhance the built environment.

About our design approach…

RAW MATERIALS
We like to think of our office as a piece of machinery. Raw materials in the form of design factors are fed into the machine... conceptual goals, physical site information, program, budgetary constraints, zoning code limits, client preferences, material research, builder feedback, building code limitations, and small- and large-scale contextual influences are all commonly addressed. By running a set of variable factors through a consistent and transparent process, the resulting forms and design solutions which are produced are true to their own terms and born of a rational logic.

OPERATING THE MACHINE
The machine runs on the creativity and knowledge of our designers. We arrange the factors at play to shape a flexible solution, which allows both a projects’ advantages and limitations to inform the outcome of the design. We look for opportunities to use design to achieve maximum efficiency and minimal waste. We utilize our experience to streamline our own internal processes, as well as improve the processes we prescribe for others.

EVOLUTION
A constantly-changing set of external factors allows us the opportunity to test, modify, and update the machine on a real-time basis. These factors include economic forces, technological advances, construction practices, updated zoning and building codes, societal cues, lifestyle habits and preferences, and attitudes toward the past, present, and future of cities and buildings. With each day | week | month | year that passes we use these inputs to evolve our design process. By constantly expanding the fields of view, more opportunities arise to optimize a project’s potential.

CONSTRUCTING THE OUTPUT
The resultant forms and solutions that the machine can generate are often unique and complex. We are aware of the gap between the building that exists on paper and the building that gets constructed on the ground; our role in the construction stage can serve to minimize that gap. We are knowledgeable and approachable with members of the construction industry, and seek to create working partnerships that bring more of the stakeholders into the design process from the outset. Our inherent understanding and analysis of our own designs allows us a unique position to serve as ongoing professional support during the construction stage, and we look for opportunities to enhance efficiency and economy before construction begins.
